The military goals have been proclaimed achieved by the Saudi officials, as Saudi Arabia and its allies stop the bombing of rebels in Yemen.
The campaign, Decisive Storm, lasted for a month, and bombed the Houthi rebels, but it didn’t do a lot to stop them. The new approach will be political, and the Saudis will concentrate on eradicating the terrorism at home, and help achieve peace in Yemen through dialog. This new approach is called Restoring Hope campaign. The decision to stop the bombing was welcomed by Iran, which opposed the bombing campaign from day one. Iran was accused by the Saudis of helping the Shia Houthis in Yemen, but the officials in Tehran denied any involvement in the clash.
The country is still in chaos, ever since the rebels took control over Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, and arrested the President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, and placed them in house arrest. The President soon escaped to Aden, and eventually left Yemen, when the rebels reached this southern port, one of the biggest in the country. The Houthi were helped by some parts of the army still supporting Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was President of Yemen before Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
The goal of the bombing was to restore the President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadiabck to power, and destroy the rebels. But it is speculated that the true reason for the bombing was an effort to stop the spreading of Iran’s influence in Yemen. Iran was obviously supplying the Houthi rebels with guns, as it supports most of the Shia minorities in surrounding countries.
Although Saudi Arabia and its allies proclaimed victory, none of the goals set before the bombing started were accomplished – the Houthi rebels are still very much active, and the president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi has not been restored.
The United States of America expressed concern about the campaign cost, and particularly about the civilian casualties. The most worrying fact to the Americans is the growing power of Al-Qaeda in Yemen, which used all the mayhem to gain more supporters and strengthen its position.
